Beware of Dark Patterns: Hidden Tricks in Online Shopping

Online shopping has become a part of everyday life for most Filipinos. From Lazada and Shopee flash sales to TikTok Shop deals, everything we need—gadgets, clothes, and even dinner ingredients—can be bought with just a few taps. But not all is what it seems online. Behind some appealing buttons and pop-up messages are hidden “dark patterns”—sneaky design tricks that make you spend more, sign up for things you don’t want, or share more data than is necessary.

Dark patterns are not obvious scams; they’re manipulative design tactics that make websites or apps look helpful but are actually built to benefit the seller, not you.

Common Dark Patterns in Filipino Online Stores:

1. “Only 1 item left!” and “10 people are viewing this now”

These messages create false urgency. While some are real, many are exaggerated or even automated to pressure you into buying fast—before you can think twice or compare prices elsewhere.

2. Hidden shipping or service fees

Ever noticed how your total jumps up only at checkout? Some apps show low prices at first but reveal extra “handling,” “insurance,” or “delivery” charges later on. These late add-ons rely on people being too tired to back out.

3. The sneaky “pre-checked” box

You complete an order and later realize you were subscribed to a monthly “VIP” or “membership” plan you never wanted. That small checked box you didn’t notice? That’s a dark pattern at work.

4. Fake countdown timers

Some sites display timers that reset after expiry. They make it seem like you’ll miss an exclusive deal when in reality, the promo continues indefinitely.

5. Hard-to-cancel subscriptions

Canceling a service or auto-renewal is often harder than signing up for it. You may be asked to contact customer service or click through multiple confusing steps—hoping you’ll just give up.

How to Detect and Avoid Dark Patterns

1. Slow down before you click “Buy now.”

Dark patterns rely on pressure and speed. Take a minute to review your cart, total cost, and all checked boxes before paying.

2. Watch out for emotional triggers.

If a site makes you feel panicked (“only 3 left!”) or guilty (“don’t miss out on this one-time deal”), pause and think. A good offer won’t need to guilt-trip you into buying.

3. Look for fine print.

Read the small details—especially under “Terms and Conditions,” “Membership,” or “Auto-renewal.” Even one line can help you avoid hidden charges.

4. Review your emails and subscriptions regularly.

Check for automatic deductions or recurring subscriptions. If you didn’t intentionally sign up, unsubscribe, or contact support immediately.

5. Trust your gut—and your research.

If something feels too good to be true, it probably is. Compare prices across platforms or wait 24 hours before buying. The temptation often fades once emotion cools down.

Dark patterns play with human feelings—panic, excitement, and fear of missing out. As Filipino consumers continue to enjoy online shopping, let’s stay alert and shop smarter. The best way to fight dark patterns is awareness. Once you know how these tricks work, you take back control of your decisions—and your hard-earned money stays where it belongs: with you.
